Okay, kids, your turn.

Great job!

Wow!

psh. That's not a self portrait. You're not left handed. Or googly eyed for that matter.

Also, you're kids seem infinitely more complex than mine. What kind of elementary school kid reproduces Munch's "The Scream" as a self portrait? Damn cool ones, that's who. Mine would probably all draw pictures of themselves holding hands with Stitch or something.

those kids are fucked up, man. i admit the scream was pretty cool and came out of nowhere but the rest of them are the most horrible neglected monster yankii children i will probably ever know in my life. i cannot wait to change schools. it actually sucks really bad! is there anything worse than a bad school? families and homes are naturally likely to be messed up, but school? seriously you have dozens of adults trained and paid to create a safe and stimulating place for kids to spend their days and like, geez! i can't articulate right now but bad schools/teachers give me tantrums.

Those are great! Totally want to steal this idea. I especially like the top one.

Oh yeah, most of my kids seem pretty normal/spoiled, but I have this one girl and I feel bad for her! I think her parents are heavy smokers and she always come to class dirty, reeking of cigarettes, she's forgetful, has a hard time grasping simple stuff, and often is sick and has a smoker's cough. She's 7.

selena - i didn't know you were teaching!

i work in a scummy neighborhood, the principal and vp are totally apathetic and uninvolved, the 1st and 2nd grade teachers are fine but all the rest are really young and incompetent and there's no discipline anywhere. there are about a dozen seriously ridiculously ill-behaved kids who corrupt all of the classes and no one does anything about it even though the teachers are constantly having fits and can't get anything done. it's so unfair to everyone. the other day the worst one ended up physically attacking his teacher. after a huge fuss with all the teachers running into the hall to intervene, the kid basically got yelled at and then put back at his desk to keep yelling obscenities and holding up the class as usual. he's obviously not getting what he needs at home, but is that seriously all anyone can do with him at school? what the fuck kind of person is he supposed to turn into? it drives me insane. AAAAAND RANTED

Hmmm. Brings back some memories... (not really adding much to the discussion there, just wanted to nod my head online)

Hey Beth, I have a lot of jobs. One of them is a couple hours a week at a juku.

That sounds horrid about the "bad" kids. Don't they have a counselor or some kind of program where he can at least get some individual attention. I remember being sort of dismissive of guidance counselors in h.s., but in retrospect, it did make a difference to have someone who listened to you and tried to help find direction.

selena -- a guidance counselor comes to the school once a week or so but what she does is a mystery.

i heard the teachers discussing the incident in the teacher's room today basically in terms of "he's not a good kid" and "he'll always be bad." really? it's not like i know anything at all about kids or teaching but i've been around a little bit by now and i think i can safely say this school is ridiculous and appalling.

it's basically made me start seriously considering a career as an elementary school teacher to see if i can do better, what the fuck, STOP FUCKING UP MY BUM LIFE DREAMS, JOB!
